What FWB means

FWB stands for friends with benefits: two people who genuinely like each other as friends and also sleep together, without romantic obligations, exclusivity or a shared future. Unlike a one night stand it repeats, and unlike a situationship it is defined: both sides know exactly what this is and what it is not.

The rules that make it work

Successful FWB arrangements look surprisingly organised. The classics: honesty about other people (you owe no fidelity, but you owe information relevant to health), protection as standard, no couple-like rituals such as anniversaries or meeting parents, and an agreement on what happens if one side catches feelings. The friendship stays primary: if the sex ever threatens it, the sex goes.

The feelings problem

The most common ending is not drama but chemistry: the human brain bonds through intimacy whether we plan it or not. Studies of FWB arrangements show a large share ends with one side wanting more. That is not failure, it is biology, and the mature version of the arrangement includes a standing agreement: we tell each other the moment it stops being casual, and we choose together what happens next.

Is it for you

FWB suits people who are honest with themselves: after a breakup, in a busy life phase, or simply not looking for romance. It punishes people who secretly want more and hope the benefits convert. In our lexicon, see also: ONS, situationship and open relationship.

Česta pitanja

Can a FWB arrangement survive one side falling in love?

Only through honesty, and even then rarely in its original form. The moment feelings appear, say so: the other person either feels the same, and you upgrade, or does not, and you pause the benefits to save the friendship. Hiding feelings while continuing the arrangement is the one guaranteed way to lose both.

How is FWB different from a situationship?

Definition. FWB is explicitly agreed: both sides know it is friendship plus sex with no romantic track. A situationship is precisely the absence of that agreement: it behaves like a relationship but nobody will name it, which usually leaves one side quietly hoping. FWB is honest by design; a situationship is vague by design.
