Ghosting
Meet people who reply
What ghosting means
Ghosting is ending a relationship or conversation by simply disappearing: no explanation, no goodbye, no reply to messages. One day the person is there, the next they are a ghost. The term grew out of online dating but now covers friendships and even workplaces.
Why people ghost
Rarely out of cruelty, mostly out of avoidance: saying that something is not working feels uncomfortable, and silence feels easier. Some ghosters juggle several conversations and let the least interesting ones die quietly; others panic when things get serious. None of that makes it acceptable, but it helps to know the silence usually says more about their coping skills than about your worth.
Why it hurts so much
Because there is no closure. A clear rejection stings once; silence keeps the question open, and the brain fills the gap with self-blame. Psychologists compare it to social exclusion, which activates the same brain regions as physical pain. The healthiest reading of a ghost is also the most accurate one: the answer was no, delivered badly.
How to handle it
One follow-up message is fine; begging for an explanation is not, because you already have it. Resist the detective work, mute rather than monitor, and treat the disappearance as information about the other person. In our lexicon, see also: orbiting, zombieing, breadcrumbing and benching, the whole family of modern vanishing acts.

Should I text someone who ghosted me?
One short, dignified follow-up is fair: maybe your message got lost. After that, stop. Chasing an explanation gives the ghost exactly what they avoided giving you: your time and attention. Silence after two messages is a complete answer, just delivered poorly.
Is it ever okay to ghost someone?
After one or two casual chats with no plans made, quietly fading out is common and mostly harmless. Once real dates, intimacy or feelings are involved, a short honest message is the adult minimum. The only clear exception: if someone is aggressive or makes you feel unsafe, you owe them nothing, block and go.
